Do You Brag in Your Tweets? You're Not Telling the Truth

It's probably a big "duh" but a new study has found that Twitter doesn't reflect actual life experiences (kind of like Facebook).  Or emotions. Researchers have found no evidence that social media content shared on Twitter is a truthful reflection of how its users feel, according to newswise.com It's no surprise to anyone who tweets but the study demonstrated that  Twitter users "have developed their own unique cultural behavior, conversations and identities, which shape the ways in which they present their views online," the web site reports, adding that social convention, power relationships and identity influence online conversation just as much as off-line interactions, but in ways that are not yet fully understood. Research has also shown that Tweeters are not representative of the general population. In just one example, men are much more likely to use Twitter than women.  Those who may tweet many times a day may be over-represented in any ...

Being Boastful is Nothing to Brag About

It all comes down to bragging. Pity poor Donald Trump . He won the presidency by clinching the Electoral College . But he just can’t stand that Hillary won the popular vote. In fact, some research points to the fact that, if you add the third-party candidates, Trump won less than 54 percent of our votes. Who would quibble about that? Trump, of course. He needs to be able to brag about everything. Even if you’re not a braggart like Trump, chances are you still probably brag. I guess it’s human nature. We all want to feel like we’re the best, when often, we just didn’t feel that great about ourselves. We brag to feel better about ourselves. But bragging can hide a hole in our heart. Biographers say it all started with Trump’s father, who ran him down a lot. I suspect the bragging was Trump’s way of propping himself up. Experts provide a rationale for that. They say that once we have a negative sense of ourselves, we need to find something that makes us feel good, ...

Hate Facebook? Love Facebook? Need Facebook?

I have a friend who posts everything she does -- from the restaurants where she drinks wine (holding up the glass to prove it) to the meals she prepares in her kitchen to the new car she bought with a convertible top (posed with a Santa cap and the top down at Christmas), angling for likes. I guess you would say she's dependent on Facebook Now a new study says that if what drives you to Facebook is feedback on your posts, or even just news, or games, yup.  You're hooked.  But that's not necessarily a bad thing, says Amber Ferris, an assistant professor of communication at The University of Akron's Wayne College. at newswise.com. Ferris, who studies Facebook user trends, says the more people use Facebook to fulfill their goals, the more dependent on it they become. She is quick to explain this dependency is not equivalent to an addiction. Rather, the reason why people use Facebook determines the level of dependency they have on the social network. The study...

Breaking Up is Hard to Do - At Least, with Facebook

Want some reasons to break up with Facebook?  Experts say there are four but I'm sure you can think of many more.  The time your (ex) fiance changes his listing back to "single" (and this is before he tells you!). The time you learned (as I have, many times) about the parties your kid's not invited to.  The endless stream of kids making high honors, or slugging the winning ball or hot beach vacations when you were just jumped by a loose dog and had your cell phone stolen, to boot (read: me).   New research from Cornell Information Science discovered four reasons why our relationship with Facebook is complicated, according to newswise.com: • Perceived addiction – Those who feel that Facebook is addictive or habitual were more likely to return, according to the group’s research. One participant described this habitual aspect by saying, “In the first ten days, whenever I opened up an Internet browser, my fingers would automatically go to 'f'.” • Priv...
