Are You a Slacker? Do You Think You're One? You Might Die Sooner Than Your Friends

Do you take your time when there's a project due?  Are you the last to any meeting?  Do you wait until your friends choose a place for lunch, then go along if you like it? Are you a slacker ? Watch out, says a new study, according to newswise.com.  Feeling less active than your peers is associated with an earlier death, the study says. People who think they’re less active than others their age have a greater chance of dying younger than people who perceive themselves as more active, even if their actual activity levels are the same, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.  People who believed they weren’t as active as their peers were 71 percent more likely to die during the study’s follow-up period than were people who believed they had a more active lifestyle, the study said. This result remained even after controlling for actual amounts of activity, chronic illnesses, age and other demographic and health factors....

Your Eyes Are the Key to Your Soul -- Well, Your Patience and Impulsiveness, Anyway

Quick.  How fast did you read this sentence? If it was less than a millisecond, you may be one of those -- like me -- who makes impulsive decisions. Turns out, thanks to a new study , it's been found that the quicker you move your eyes, the less patient you are, according to newswise.com. " Using a simple study of eye movements, Johns Hopkins scientists report evidence that people who are less patient tend to move their eyes with greater speed," the Web site reports. The findings, the researchers say, suggest that the weight people give to the passage of time may be a trait "consistently used throughout their brains, affecting the speed with which they make movements, as well as the way they make certain decisions" Researchers set out to find  why some people are willing to wait and others aren’t.  I don't know about you but the second I see a line forming at a store, I want to get in it, even sometimes before I've made all the purchases I came for...

New Link: Asthma and Obesity

OK, all you smokers out there (are there any?).  A new study has revealed that quitting smoking leads to higher wages. According to The Wall Street Journal, "Former smokers earn higher wages than smokers and people who have never smoked, according to new research." Whjy? Data in the report shows that nonsmokers, which include people who never smoked, and former smokers, "bring in about 95% of the hourly wages of former smokers." Smokers earn about 80% of what nonsmokers and former smokers earn, the survey notes.  Is it because of a lack of productivity?  You know, all those poor souls standing out in the cold with their noxious clouds of fumes you have to walk through to get to your building.   The study did not find this. "They determined that differences in the characteristics of smokers and nonsmokers, such as educational attainment, as well as unmeasured factors like an employer’s tolerance to smoking behavior are mostly driving the wage gap,...

One-Two Punch: Cancer and Diabetes Link

Very scary.  Scientists are now finding that those with Type 2 diabetes are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than those without.  One study found that one in five diabetes patients developed a cancer. It may be because those who are overweight are prone to diabetes and weight has also been proven a factor in cancer. But it may be deeper than that.  Some think it may have something to do with insulin levels. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/04/04/diabetes-increases-risk-of-cancer-death-2/
