Can Eating Flowers Ward Off Disease?

Sounds a little too new-agey for me.  But a new study has found that eating certain kinds of flowers could ward off chronic disease. Newswise.com reports that some e dible flowers, which have been used in the culinary arts in China for centuries, contain phenolics that have been correlated with anti-inflammatory activity and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. "The findings of this study show that common edible flowers have the potential to be used as an additive in food to prevent chronic disease, help health promotion and prevent food oxidization," the Web site notes .  However, the antioxidant mechanisms, the anti-tumor, anti-inflammation and anti-aging activity of the edible flower extracts still need to be further studied to develop more applications as natural antioxidants. Here are some of the flowers, and diseases they might prevent, according to The Times of India: Apple and Orange Blossoms: They're  clearly the most popular ...

Meet the New Weight Loss Miracle: Tea.

I've been drinking it for years -- maybe because my British grandmother would always have a spot of "tea and toast" every afternoon at 4. But I love tea, especially iced tea, which I drink year-round, and now a new study is proving me right.  Or, at least for once, in the know. "Tea may indeed be a magical elixir," medicalnewstoday.com reports, " as it was shown to promote weight loss, prevent chronic illnesses and improve mood." And our British counterparts consume   165 million cups daily , the Web site notes. Believe it or not, tea is the second most-consumed beverage in the world, beaten out only by water.    "Researchers who looked at polyphenols - natural compounds in tea - found that they, along with the caffeine content, increased energy expenditure and fat oxidation, which resulted in weight loss a...

Prevent Prostate Cancer? Drink Coffee, Lots of It

Prostate cancer -- and the avoidance of it -- has become a very confusing, frustrating experience for most men.  Have a prostate specific antigen (PSA). Don't have a PSA. Have a biopsy if something is found. Don't have a biopsy.  What's a guy to do? Talk to your urologist probably, but a new study says it may all just be solved with coffee.  The study has found that three to four cups of java a day is associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer recurrence and progression, according to newswise.com. Researchers studied whether the bioactive compounds in coffee and tea may prevent prostate cancer recurrence and delay progression of the disease and found that "men who drank four or more cups of coffee per day experienced a 59 percent reduced risk of prostate cancer recurrence and/or progression as compared to those who drank only one or fewer cups per week," newswise.com reports. But before you get too excited, the study found no link between drinking mor...
