Economically Dependent on Your Spouse? You Just May Cheat

Now this is a surprise (at least, to me). You're more likely to cheat if you're economically dependent on your spouse. Hmm, when I was, I was terrified to do anything that put me at risk.  Having no income, and nowhere to go, with a small son, when things got shaky I just had to hold on. Now a new study is saying that, in an average year, there is about a 5 percent chance that women who are completely economically dependent on their husbands will cheat, whereas there is about a 15 percent chance that men who are entirely economically dependent on their wives will have an affair. OK, I can see the male point (feeling less manly, maybe).  But women?  “You would think that people would not want to ‘bite the hand that feeds them’ so to speak, but that is not what my research shows,” says study author Christin L. Munsch, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Connecticut, at newswise.com. “Instead, the findings indicate people like feeling relative...

Are Emoticons The New Pick-Up Lines?

Who'd have guessed?  Men are more jealous when a member of their own sex uses an emoticon in a text to their significant other than women. According to new research,“Men were more jealous when emoticons—specifically winking ones—were included in messages to their significant other,” says Dr. Denise Friedman, associate professor and chair of psychology at Roanoke College, and author of the study. She adds that women were more jealous when there were no emoticons. Say what?   Now I'm lucky because my husband hates computers and only uses one when he absolutely has to.  A few years ago his office moved to electronic medical records and he was forced, kicking and screaming, to enter the digital age.  He wouldn't know an emoticon from a leprechaun. Men and women also reacted in different ways, depending on how the study questions were asked, according to newswise.com. Women reported more Facebook jealousy in general, especially when surveyed, but men reporte...

Men's Deep Voices Attract Women, Who Then Fear They'll Cheat

Admit it. That low sexy voice gets you every time. And it's just been proved by a new study that's found that "men with low-pitched voices have an advantage in attracting women, even though women know they’re not likely to stick around for long," according to newswise.com. But for the men, maybe not so much, really. While researchers at McMaster University discovered that women were more attracted to men with masculine voices, at least for short-term relationships, "those men were also seen as more likely to cheat and unsuitable for a longer relationship, such as marriage." "The sound of someone’s voice can affect how we think of them,” newswise.com quotes Jillian O’Connor, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour and lead author of the study. Isn't it always a shock when a woman with a tight, whiny voice turns out to be a lookalike for Sofia Vergara? Or, a man with a deep, booming voice is really ...
